The Facial Surgery Research Foundation-Saving Faces

Saving Faces is a small charity that works to improve treatment for people who suffer with facial disfigurement, injury and disease.

We research better treatment for and prevention of mouth cancer:

In the UK 5000 people get mouth cancer every year

It’s twice as common as cervical cancer

It’s the most disfiguring cancer and affects patients’ ability to speak and eat

We research better treatment for facial injury:

125,000 young people sustain serious facial injuries every year in the UK

We research better psychological support for patients with facial disfigurement:

15,000 people in the UK seek treatment for facial disfigurement every year.

The surgeons who are taking part in our research are working hard to improve the treatment of all patients with mouth cancer and other disfiguring facial injuries and diseases. They give their time pro bono but Saving Faces makes this research possible by providing researchers to collect outcome data about differing treatment protocols and research. Saving Faces also funds psychology researchers and trains surgeons in research. It provides patient-to-patient support through its expert patient ‘phone line.

Sky Ride Cycle Events and Saving Faces

Sky Ride is a great concept: a series of regional cycling events ideal for families and friends, the young and the old, to enjoy a leisurely pedal around one of 12 UK cities. The rides are without the competitive edge of top level amateur cycling events, and without the traffic – the cities close their streets to cars.

This year, when signing up for one of the events, cyclists will be asked to create a JustGiving page for either the WWF (Sky’s partner charity) or any JustGiving charity member of their choice. Here is your chance to support us by choosing  Saving Faces

Saving Faces Artwork to feature in new exhibition

The exhibition Skin Deep at the Surgeons' Hall Museums in Edinburgh runs from the 6th August 2010 to April 2011.
It explores the effects of cosmetic changes and disfigurements to the face and looks at the historic attempts to reconstruct or alter the face to make people 'acceptable' in society. The influence of war and punishment, and the resulting injuries and innovations are also charted in this exhibition  and this includes McIndoe's Guinea Pig Club.  An attempt is made to discover the personal reasons behind surgery and what effect surgery can
have on the psychology of the patient. The Saving Faces art exhibition is featured as an electronic presentation. The stories and images bring out the psychological impact on patients and represents the patients' view of facial surgery.

Saving Faces Family Bike Ride

The sponsored family bike ride was a huge success. We certainly could not have asked for better weather. We would like to thank everyone involved with this event - the cyclists, those of you who were unable to join in, but generously sponsored your relatives, friends or Iain and his colleagues and last, but by no means least of course, all the helpers. You are all wonderful and we have raised lots of money which is still coming in. We will give you the final amount as soon as we have it.

Professor Hutchison completed his 50 miles. His online sponsorship page is still open to receive donations
