'There are pictures that can shock you. But there are also pictures that can touch you. Artist Mark Gilbert paints portraits of patients of London's facial surgeon, Iain Hutchison. Their joint project Saving Faces is not only about art, it is also about therapy. It will give back self-confidence to disfigured people and will show the world that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.'

Photo of Kelly Smith, who had a series of facial reconstructive operations Kelly Smith, 21, lives in Yorkshire. Aged 15, she had a rare form of cancer which necessitated the removal of one eye and some of the tissue around it. This feature discussed reasons for reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

Portraits from the Saving Faces Exhibition were used to illustrate features on how to train in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
